Popular Vote and Representation

Since the 1900 presidential election, each state has held a statewide or district-wide popular vote on Election Day in November. In each election, voters cast their ballots for a slate of electors, who in turn pledge to vote for the presidential and vice presidential candidates who receive the most votes in their respective state. The number of electors allocated to each state is based on its population, as determined by the U.S. Census.

Electoral College Allocations

The following table shows the electoral college allocations for each state based on the 2020 Census. These allocations will remain in effect for the 2024 and 2028 presidential elections:
