The Crime of the Avox
Haymitch explains that an Avox is someone who has committed a crime and had their tongue cut out. Katniss expresses her disbelief, but Peeta Mellark, another District 12 tribute, covers for her by suggesting that the Avox girl resembles someone they know.
Haymitch's History and Apathy
Haymitch reveals that he has never seen a District 12 tribute survive the Hunger Games since his own victory. As a result, he has become hopeless and apathetic, turning to alcohol for relief from the trauma he and his mentees have endured.
